Located in the Skansekaia Harbour area, Quality Hotel Ålesund offers private quay access and rooms with free WiFi, overlooking the sea and surrounding islands. A very nice hotel I chose early for its closeness to the Hurtigruten boat. The staff were charming and very welcoming. The dinner was superb—salmon and a perfect cocktail. Breakfast was perfect and varied. I recommend it.

We stayed in the family room, which was very spacious with a separate bunk area for the kids. The bedding was very comfortable and the blackout curtains worked well. The hotel’s location made it easy to explore Ålesund on foot, and we were happy not to need a car after a morning on the road. The kids loved the games in the lobby and the parents enjoyed the bar for an aperitif nearby. We could leave our luggage in a secure room and start sightseeing while waiting for the room to be ready. Breakfast was huge and excellent. A bonus: the hotel organizes guided morning runs around town with a local resident, which was a great exchange and discovery for runners. The staff were adorable. The only complaint was that, being in Ålesund on a Sunday evening, many restaurants were closed. For simplicity we dined at the hotel restaurant, but we were disappointed by the long wait time (even though few tables were occupied) and the limited à la carte options.

If you’re planning to catch the Hurtigruten to Bergen, which leaves at 1 am, this is the best place – it’s just 2 minutes from the boarding point. They let you stay in the lobby, which offers some nice, comfortable spaces until then
