The Inn at Houmas House Estate

I loved walking the gardens at night with all the fairy lights – so pretty – and the tour of the main house was great; our guide was fantastic. We stayed at the Guest House and our room was very clean. We loved the whole place. The bed was hard to get out of; we had a King bed, my husband is 6ft 2 and kept hitting the sides of the wooden frame every time he got out. We were told our room was ready, we walked all the way just to find they had given us the wrong code, then we walked all the way back to get the correct code – it was a chore as we had to drag our suitcases quite a way. Also the front door area needed a good clean, but once inside the room was clean.

The gardens were lovely, but the restaurant’s service was arrogant, the food quality was disastrous with a lot of pretension, the prices were insane, and the waiter clearly felt he was waiting for you to finish before he could leave.

The room felt spacious, nicely decorated and came with a fridge, coffee maker, a TV (which I didn’t use) and other basics; the bed was very comfortable and everything looked immaculate. The bathroom was also huge and stocked with plush towels. Our private patio was generous, fitted with two swing chairs and a small table. We dined in the restaurant housed in the carriage house, which shared the same tasteful décor, and the food was delicious. The only surprise was an ashtray full of ash left on the patio table, which we slipped under the table and wiped the surface with a cloth; otherwise the room and bathroom were spotless. Breakfast was just okay—scrambled eggs and bacon were fine, the biscuits acceptable, but the only yoghurt offered was sweetened and the orange juice came from a carton, and the coffee tasted a bit too acidic for my liking.
