Owl's Nest

Huge thanks to Michael for his warm welcome, constant availability, delicious cooking and helpful suggestions! Beyond all his strengths, he’s a genuinely charming person. Thanks to him we were able to experience Udawalawe properly. A shaded break close to nature, a real haven of peace. Nothing to add.

The food was fantastic—freshly prepared, served kindly, generous portions, even dessert… great! Evenings and breakfasts were equally good. Michael is a seasoned owner, speaks good English, and says wise things. He’s also an iron‑sculpture artist. He loves animals and nature, showed us beautiful sights, brought us to the park. Then a peacock walked along the fence, a pretty bird nested in the fan’s base, monkeys watched from a respectful distance… The warm pool was perfect for pure relaxation. The house is tasteful and full of surprising details. Wherever you look, interesting things appear. It was a wonderful stay.

“Onbeschrijflijk mooi plekje, lieve mensen, heel bijzondere sfeer, hier voel je je in het echte Sri Lanka!”

Such a beautiful location, a tiny house you’d almost call adorable, and such friendly hosts! Hidden in the forest bordering the wildlife park, a little away from the larger resorts, lies a small house with guest rooms and a family apartment. All art is made by the owner himself. A lovely little garden where a herd of buffalos passed by. A few days earlier an elephant. You could hear them in the evening. You could enjoy local food at night if you asked. There’s also a small pool. The owner also took us at the end of the day to spot deer. And then we suddenly found ourselves opposite a huge elephant! He also arranged the safari for us and after it breakfast was ready! Right next to the wildlife park entrance. Truly recommended, so unique and cozy! Nothing was bad, everything was wonderful. The air‑conditioning has to be booked separately but I could also get it on the spot when I forgot.

Michael is a wonderful person and host. We felt welcomed instantly and had a truly fabulous, extraordinary time. We stayed only 2 nights and actually saw 2 elephants on the terrace. Michael drove us around and showed us beautiful places in Udewalawe. He also organized a very good safari tour for us. The elephant nursery is within walking distance. Breakfast and dinner were very generous and delicious. A swim in his new pool is also highly recommended. We can only recommend it highly and want to come back someday.

One of the best places we stayed in Sri Lanka. The host was magnificent and showed us around the nearby spots. He was extremely kind and very helpful. He also cooked amazing food (really recommend having a meal here). He creates amazing art from metal and wood and has a beautiful garden facing the national park. Nice location close to the elephants, the elephant orphanage and some nice restaurants. We left with great memories!
