“Top Notch”
Everything matched my expectations – the staff were outstanding, the property itself was impressive, the grounds are beautiful, and you can dine indoors or outdoors. However, the fish chips marketed as “triple‑cooked” were disappointing; they seemed pre‑packed and reheated rather than truly triple‑cooked, and the chef might benefit from watching Heston’s example.
“very average stay.”
The location was scenic and the main house was a nice building with lovely smelling toiletries, clean grounds, and a safe room. However, the room could have been cleaner—there were traces of dog hair—and the beams described online were missing. The sauna was quite small, and I had to ask for robes.
“Pleasant”
The room was comfy and breakfast was good, but the gym feels dull and lacks any real vibe.
“An extremely pleasant and relaxing 3 night stay, and would return, perhaps with my own glassware!”
The room was perfect with lovely views of the gardens, and the atmosphere was excellent with very helpful staff. The topiary gardens were outstanding. On the downside, breakfast arrangements made it nearly impossible to have both food and coffee hot at the same time. The evening dining menu was extremely limited and basic, and the bar and dining room lacked proper glassware—no liquor or brandy glasses, liquors served in whisky glasses, and the wine glasses were poor/cheap quality. This isn’t what I would expect from a four‑star hotel; if you want decent glassware bring your own.
“Awful”
I stayed in the premier inn block above a conference centre because I had a dog, so I couldn't use any of the main house rooms; the window was tiny and the staff from the check‑in desk to the breakfast team seemed uninterested. The part of the house that was supposedly old and pretty turned out to be ruined by the 1960s extension.
