Our holiday in Sri Lanka got off to a brilliant start thanks to the hotel’s warm staff and colonial ambience; we stayed in the Doctors House with our family of five, which offered three spacious bedrooms. Tommy and the team treated us wonderfully, providing personal service and excellent food, so I’d highly recommend it.

Nisala Arana is such a tranquil oasis. The grounds are beautiful and there’s something very special about having breakfast whilst watching the kingfishers, green bee eaters and other lovely Sri Lankan birds. The breakfast was the best we had on our travels. We also ate dinner there a couple of times and it was delicious. The team were really accommodating of our 2 little kids and provided high chairs and child appropriate food. The rooms were lovely with a great hot shower and good aircon. They had mosquito nets and anti mosquito coils. They even provided a cot with a net over it for our baby. We would love to come back here some day, it’s a special place. Nothing!

The only bright spots were the friendly staff and the tasty breakfast. Unfortunately, our stay was a huge disappointment. We booked several nights with family, but after the first night we had to leave. My wife and our young son slept together and woke up covered in numerous bites all over their bodies. After consulting a doctor and sending photos, we were told the bites had a typical bed‑bug pattern—lines on the neck, back, stomach, and legs. We left immediately and found new accommodation. When we contacted the owner with the photos, he denied any bed‑bugs, claiming the bites were from sand flies, even though we hadn’t been on the beach before staying. The bites caused severe allergic reactions that lasted about two weeks, ruining our trip. What hurt the most was the owner’s response: no solution or compensation, and he seemed more concerned about us paying for the remaining nights even though we had already left. Because of this, we cannot recommend the hotel.

The garden setting is stunning, teeming with wildlife, and the rooms are stylishly beautiful. We loved the authentic village vibe away from the busier areas and the proximity to the river. The staff were absolutely lovely. A few more sunbeds by the pool would be handy.

The location is breathtaking, with a real wow factor, and we had a lovely stay at this unique boutique hotel. Our accommodation was immaculate, spacious, and featured an amazing bathroom. Each morning, before a delicious breakfast, we swam in the fantastic sized pool set in well‑kept gardens while tropical birds sang in the background—pure bliss! It ranks among the best places we’ve ever stayed. Huge thanks to Tony and his fantastic team for their smiles, incredible welcome, generous hospitality, and always going the extra mile. We didn’t want to leave this idyllic place and definitely hope to return one day.
