Hotel Caroline Mathilde

I paid €120 for a night at Caroline Mathilde and was utterly disappointed. The first thing that hit me was a strong, biting smell of cold cigarette smoke as soon as I entered the hotel – a grossly unhygienic welcome that was completely unacceptable for that price. The worst part was the privacy violation by the cleaning staff: while I was in the shower, they entered my room twice, which caused extreme stress. Later, during a hectic 11:00 am checkout, I left my sunglasses in the room, called the front desk an hour later, and the receptionist found them on a shelf and promised to mail them to me. He also mentioned that the room had not yet been cleaned, which made me question why the cleaner had already entered my room twice between 10:00 and 11:00 if nothing had been done. The overall service was poorly organized, and the staff’s conduct was simply unacceptable. If you’re looking for a safe and relaxing stay, steer clear of this place.

The location by the Aller is very quiet, and the rooms are spacious, though the lighting could be a bit brighter. Breakfast was plentiful, but I missed whole‑grain bread. The cozy bar would have been better if it stayed open past 10 pm.

Breakfast and the attentive, friendly service really pleased us. My travel companion had to change rooms because insects and beetles made her original room uninhabitable – disgusting. The replacement room, 301, was a nightmare: it wasn’t cleaned, had many dirty corners, and the bathroom was barely usable. The sink is so close to the shower cubicle that a normal‑sized person can’t stand in front of it. It’s hard to believe a room like that would be offered in a supposedly 4‑star hotel. No financial compensation was offered, so we were given the minibar contents for free. My room, 303, was mostly fine, but the window frame was broken, sharp wooden edges protruded, and the shower cubicle edges were also rough. Everything felt a bit outdated or poorly maintained, so I’d rate it a 3‑star room. At least the mattress, pillows, safe, and TV with good reception were satisfactory. We loved the breakfast room’s selection and service. The location is great, within walking distance of the old town. The neighboring restaurant/bar didn’t have cocktails or limes that evening, which was a let‑down.

The single room was spacious and quiet, with a nice bathroom and very friendly staff. The breakfast area was pleasant, tastefully decorated, and the buffet was delicious. The only downside was that the toilet basins were very low.

Die Suite war wunderbar eingerichtet. Das Personal beim Frühstück war sehr aufmerksam. Anreise war zu früh und vollkommen in Ordnung, dass ein Check in nicht möglich ist. Hätte mich gefreut, wenn das Personal von sich aus fragt, ob das Gepäck untergestellt werden soll
