Perched 365 m above sea level, Relais I Piastroni dominates the Tuscan countryside, overlooking Monteverdi Marittimo. Just 20 km from the sea, it sits between Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto, surrounded by forest and parkland. Guests enjoy mountain‑bike rentals, a wellness centre with sauna and Turkish bath, spacious rooms with panoramic views, and a large outdoor thermal pool.

The apartments are nicely furnished, but they swapped two TVs and there’s no night lighting, so without a phone flashlight we could have tripped. The supplied glasses for drinks had to be washed if you got them dirty; there were only two, two spoons, and three cups. Window screens are missing, so surrounded by forest you’re exposed to everything. The pool is neglected and lacks a lifeguard—great potential, but after four years we’ve seen no improvement, only the opposite.

Spacious and welcoming, and even the late check‑in was handled with great attention. The outdoor areas, however, appear to be designed in a tropical style and are very maintenance‑heavy. The breakfast waiter, without a belt, was surprised when we asked for a raw egg and a coffee for breakfast.
