The mattress looked as if someone had been murdered on it, and the housekeeper's negligence—placing sheets on it and claiming it was clean—was unacceptable.

It was close to everything—food, shopping, and interstate access—but the place was completely infested with roaches. I kept everything clean and sprayed daily, yet from the tiniest to extra large, they were always present.
