“Cory Doctorow came up with a perfect word for what has happened to this place a couple years back...”
Had the whole vibe of a decaying English country home; spectacular in it's day, but had not been looked after properly for some time. So it reminded me of home, which was nice. The cleaning staff did an excellent job. The architecture is beautiful, if terribly faded. The gardens were nice. I brought some of the issues up with hotel management, and they promised me a full refund for the days I would not be staying. Turns out this was a lie and they are currently sitting on $1200 of my money. The staff lied to try and settle my complaints and get me to leave quietly. This place has gone to seed, for the price, I expected luxury, not this bogstandard stuff. They promised farm to table dining, now I've worked in local, organic prepared food, so this was a key draw for me. The extent of the farm to table experience was eggs and herbs. I complained about this and was told, what should I expect? Apparently they can't source all their ingredients from farms, it would be too much work they said, so I guess it's easier to lie. They sourced the remaining ingredients from a supermarket, they had no shame in admitting this. So expect bland veg and meat. The 2nd time I had the beef, it was stringy and badly cooked. The tomato's were particularly dull. The breakfast was uninspiring, very normal faire you could expect from somewhere a lot cheaper. I splurged for the included dinner, for $130 a night, which was a terrible price for what I had. The "baked potato" was half raw, when I pointed this out, I was offered, 1) another potato, as I was finishing my meal 2) I was given a "complimentary" bottle of sparkling water, which was just water filled from their water filter. It got to the point where I did not trust the food from the restaurant. The pillows on the bed were absolute trash, if you like down pillows like I do, these chunky, foam filled monstrosities were genuinely uncomfortable to sleep on, too large and unyielding, and also just cheap and nasty. The sheet were nothing special, what you would expect in a good hostel. The listing mentioned fitness classes, there were none. The listing mentioned yoga classes, which were available, for $100 a session
