We stayed four in an 18‑tatami‑mat room on the third floor with a lake view. It’s a two‑minute walk to Mii‑dera’s main gate. We could soak in a deep tub in our private bathroom. The communal bath was closed—probably because it was low season or low occupancy in mid‑November. We were in Otsu to do the comfortable hike from Mii‑dera to Keage in Kyoto along the old canal. It was great.

The establishment is pretty old and rather far from the rest of the city (car highly recommended), but the rooms are very large, the bathroom is fine. The biggest thing is still being inside the temple. The next morning, when we were leaving, we were invited to participate in a fire ceremony at the temple, something we would never have had the chance to do elsewhere.

The peace, the friendliness of the staff, my name was written on a plaque at the entrance, I felt very welcome. It’s a Buddhist temple accommodation. The room is huge and clean, the futon very comfortable. Away from the tourist hustle of Kyoto. If there’s Wi‑Fi. Everything seemed fine to me because I was only there for one night and left very early.

The Miidera Temple sits right next door, and when I visited during sakura season the blossoms were stunning; the property itself feels like a shrine, and the monk kindly explained Buddhist practice. Dinner was a hassle because the nearest restaurants are around the JR station, which takes at least 20 minutes on foot, and the cafes nearby shut by 5 pm at the latest.
