Hualien City

Hualien City sits wedged between Taiwan's Central Mountain Range and the Pacific Coast. It serves primarily as the functional base camp for Eastern Taiwan, offering low-rise streets, grid-based navigation, and direct rail connections. Moving through town is easiest by scooter or bicycle due to wide avenues and flat terrain. You come here for early-morning mountain access and relaxed, sea-breeze evenings.

Hualien food relies on straightforward preparations and distinct regional ingredients. Local specialty shops focus entirely on single dishes mastered over decades. Expect savory pork-filled dumplings boiled in clear broth, freshly steamed buns, and soft pounded rice desserts.

Choose your stay location based strictly on your transit strategy. However, Taroko Gorge remains closed to tourism due to massive earthquake damage, so taking public buses to explore the gorge is no longer an active transit option.
