history
A short history
Khao Sok's dense canopy served as a secure base for Thai Communist insurgents between 1975 and 1982. Their presence kept commercial logging and mining firms out of the region, unintentionally protecting the primary rainforest. In 1980, the Thai government established the area as Thailand's 22nd national park, followed by the 1982 flooding of the central valley to build Ratchaprapha Dam.
