Udaipur

A city built around artificial lakes and royal residences.

introduction

Overview

Udaipur centres around five artificial lakes connected by dams and canals. You move between sprawling palace complexes on the eastern shores and narrow lanes packed with craft shops. Expect steep hills, auto-rickshaw traffic in Old City alleys, and water views from rooftop restaurants.

Pre-paid airport taxis

Maharana Pratap Airport lies 22 km east. Book a fixed-rate taxi at the official counter inside arrivals to avoid street haggling.

UNESCO fort buffer zone

The Hill Forts of Rajasthan listing includes nearby Kumbhalgarh. Udaipur City Palace maintains its original 16th-century urban plan.

food

Mewari thalis and spiced kachoris

Mewari cuisine relies heavily on slow-cooked lentils, clarified butter, and dried spices suited to arid regional farming. Local specialities include Dal Baati Churma—hard wheat rolls baked over direct heat, crushed into ghee, and served with spiced lentils. Mornings inside the Old City start at fried food stalls selling hot pyaaz kachoris (onion-stuffed pastries). Lakeside restaurants offer fine dining, but simple interior thali houses provide the most authentic regional cooking.

history

A short history

Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in 1559 as the new capital of Mewar, prior to the fall of Chittorgarh Fort to Mughal forces in 1568. The surrounding Aravalli range offered natural protection against siege warfare. To secure water supply in the dry terrain, the Mewar rulers engineered interconnected artificial lakes using stone masonry dams. Udaipur preserved its independence through century-long resistance against Mughal authority before entering a treaty with the British in 1818.

where to stay

Where to stay

Choose your location by trade-off: central access versus noise level. Old City havelis put you steps from temples and shops, but narrow streets prevent car drop-offs. Hanuman Ghat across the river offers quieter nights with views of the palace façade. Modern commercial hotels near Hiran Magri suit travellers needing parking and wide roads.

transport

Getting around

Large cars cannot navigate the narrow, steep streets of Udaipur's historic core. Auto-rickshaws and walking serve as the main modes of transport inside the Old City. App-based rideshare drivers operate across outer districts but often refuse trips into dense inner alleyways.
