It’s very convenient for catching a train into London and the breakfast food was good, but the eggs and beans were lukewarm and the plates were cold. I arrived around 9.00 pm after a long day and 2.5 hours on motorways, and the reception ignored me for five minutes or more while a lengthy food order for another couple was taken. The bar was well‑staffed and not busy, yet no one made eye contact or said “We’ll be with you in a moment.” (I’m in my late 70s with white hair, and it feels like that makes me invisible to younger people.) When I finally got attention, I explained how being ignored had felt, and they apologized and offered a small snack on the house, which I accepted. A free alcoholic drink was also offered, but I declined because I’m teetotal. For the rest of my stay, the reception staff went out of their way to be welcoming. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
