The Hampton Inn & Suites Columbia/Southeast-Fort Jackson is off Interstate 77, 15 minutes from Columbia city centre. Contemporary guestrooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, microwaves, refrigerators, and tea/coffee makers. Amenities include a daily continental breakfast, indoor pool, fitness centre, business centre, and launderette. It's 5 miles from the University of South Carolina and near Granby Park and Riverbanks Botanical Gardens.

After a long drive, the quietness was amazing, and the bed was comfy—though the pillows felt a bit flat, which is subjective. Breakfast was good, and the staff was amazing; everyone I met was professional, accommodating, and overall provided great hospitality. I didn’t get to use the pool or the surrounding area, but it looked nice from the windows. The cleanliness left a lot to be desired: hair in the tub and on the floors, a strange smell in the bathroom sink water that made us brush our teeth with bottled water, and the bathroom itself was the worst part, with outdated fixtures, huge cracks in the walls that held up the shower curtain, and an overall outdated feel. The exterior of the property was poorly maintained, with cigar and cigarette ashes everywhere, trash on the ground, and huge potholes at the entrance that could have damaged a low car like mine if I hadn’t driven very slowly.

Breakfast was excellent, but the room was dirty and dingy. The door stuck in the frame, slamming shut 4 inches loudly, and the AC unit was very noisy. I was overcharged and then lied to, told it was a room deposit instead of just adding extra fees, which makes budgeting a trip hard when the reservation cost isn’t reliable.

The staff was great, the facilities were very nice, and the indoor pool area was clean with warm air and pleasant water temperature. The rooms were spacious, and the breakfast area and food were fantastic. My only complaint was the bathroom in room 207, which could use some attention: the conditioner bottle was empty, causing inconvenience during showers, the wallpaper was peeling, and there were a couple of mildew stains.
