“Ask if Mom’ll be there before you decide to stay!”
The house is charming and sits on a lovely brick street. My room featured a jacuzzi tub, a nice modern touch. The booking said it was a person‑free check‑in, but when I arrived a woman who introduced herself as the owner’s mother handled the check‑in and guided me through the house, reading the information sheets that had my name on them. I stepped out for a moment, and when I returned the other guest was approaching the house as I was parking. We exchanged introductions; I already knew his name from the owner’s mother. I entered the code she gave me, and he followed. I pointed out where the key was for him, and the mother appeared upset, asking who had let him in. I explained we happened to be at the door together. She accused me of “upsetting the process.” I’m not sure what I should have done—whether to wait for the other guest to enter first or to enter and shut the door in his face. Our rooms were next to each other. In the morning I heard a door open and close, not too loudly, but what truly woke me was the mother scolding the other guest—though I don’t know what it was about. I thought I heard something about noise, 6:00, cereal. We’re adults staying in a B&B, with no intention of rude noise or raised voices (except the mother’s). The bathroom door squeaked, making me feel anxious and forcing me to play “quiet as a mouse.” I didn’t even eat breakfast that morning. I left my key where it belonged and departed. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows left me with a nagging stiff neck all day.
