“Overrated”

pictures and expectations before arrival. 1. Location is far from both the city center and jungle attractions. It can take 15 minutes just to get an Uber. 2. The gate is locked at night. We messaged the host for help—the message was read but ignored. We were left outside in the middle of the night and felt very unsafe. 3. The host does not speak English, making basic communication and requests very difficult. 4. Everything is overpriced. Tours were about 30% more expensive than other local agencies. 5. Almost no hot water, and the water pressure is extremely low. 6. Poor room isolation. When the neighbors smoked, the cigarette smell came directly into our room. 7. The most serious issue was payment. When paying in soles, the staff used an extremely unfavorable exchange rate, worse than local money exchanges. When I questioned it, the staff threatened to cancel my booking. I had to plead with them to let us stay because I was afraid they could mark us as a no-show, leaving us without a room while still being charged. The whole experience made me feel threatened and extremely uncomfortable

The bed was reasonably comfortable and the place was really in the jungle. The only staff member who greeted us and talked to us on the first two days barely spoke English, so we mostly used Google Translate. There was no air conditioning anywhere in the resort, and even the fans barely moved the air. The location was very far from the center and access was blocked by roadwork. Getting a shuttle to the lodge was very difficult. The bungalow had no privacy—windows with mesh screens and almost no curtains meant you either had to dress in the tiny bathroom or perform a strip show for the outside world. The roof of the bungalow is made of corrugated tin, and every few minutes a nut from the trees above drops onto the tin roof with a terrible boom (try sleeping through that!). Heaven forbid they should install some kind of canopy or shed over it! The shower had cold water, and the separate hot water unit had a very low hot water pressure. There was no chair in the room—you could only sit on the beds with your clothes on. We paid $100 for a “night tour” that felt like a tourist trap—other night tours show sloths, but we went up a hill behind the lodge with flashlights, saw two frogs, a tortoise, and insects. Shameful and awful! We were so bored that we left for the airport at 10 am even though our flight was at 5 pm. Note that every credit card payment incurs an extra 5 % fee.

A small, family‑run hotel where we felt welcomed from the start. The owner was very friendly and passionately shared the hotel’s history and her love for the jungle, animals, and plants. The rooms are simple but have everything you need. The food is freshly prepared and very good. We also appreciated that they accepted our vegetarian request, though meals had an extra cost. The hotel offers very nice excursions, though they are not exactly cheap. Overall, we spent three pleasant days—a highly recommended experience.

I enjoyed the breakfast and the lovely surroundings, and we were allowed to dine there both evenings, although on one night we had to give short notice. However, the facilities felt overpriced; we encountered several issues with the shower—low pressure and sometimes no hot water—and the sink clogged. The location is quite far from the city. The value for money, in my view, is fair. The beds weren't especially comfortable, and we didn't feel particularly welcomed.

The property is beautiful, very clean, the staff are friendly, and the food is excellent.
