“Kupu kupu garden is fun!”
We absolutely loved Kupu Kupu Garden! Reaching the property means walking about a kilometre beyond Bukit Lawang village along a riverside jungle path—it feels more like a little trek than a stroll. Thankfully, the staff helped with our luggage. If you’re arriving or leaving after dark, bring a flashlight. We booked the large family room, which was wonderfully spacious. There’s no air conditioning, but the two fans kept the air circulating nicely. The bed was very comfortable. We visited during the rainy season, so everything felt a little damp, but we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The staff are a lovely, fun group of young people. Special thanks to Riski, who always made us laugh; Arif, who organised our activities; Wanda, our incredibly professional guide on our two‑day jungle trek; and Ari, who kept me entertained throughout the toughest parts of the hike! We highly recommend booking a private trek with them. We saw groups from bigger operators with ten or twelve people, which felt like too many. There were just the two of us with two guides, so we could walk at our own pace. We saw at least twelve or thirteen orangutans, as well as white‑handed gibbons, pig‑tailed macaques, long‑tailed macaques and Thomas’s leaf monkeys. We saw so many monkeys that, by the end, we barely turned our heads anymore! We were lucky to have a dry night for our overnight jungle camp. Be prepared for very basic conditions: thin, narrow mattresses, thin blankets and a pillow that felt like a brick—but that’s all part of the adventure! Wanda’s son, whose name I’ve unfortunately forgotten, played reggae on the guitar, while Riski sang the Indonesian reggae song “Welcome to My Paradise.” Such wonderful memories. We had an amazing time. Thank you all!
