Heritage Grange at Thurston, Hotel

“A good value hotel for the area with a bit of rustic charm.”

I ate both dinner and breakfast at the hotel and they were both very good, and the staff were friendly. The room was pleasant and clean with a decent mattress and pillows, and the location was quiet. The shower water pressure was very low so it wasn’t great, and the TV in the room was very small. The room radiator didn’t work, but there was a portable one in the cupboard if needed.

“Strange atmosphere”

The building is nice and historic. The welcome was not particularly warm. The male manager passed us by and a lady handled the check‑in after we were told we had to reserve breakfast for the next days that night, and the kitchen might or might not be open depending on the requested time. A £20 refundable deposit was taken unnecessarily. Very matter of fact. We waited at the empty unstaffed bar for about 10 minutes and when staff arrived we were still overlooked initially. A sign on the bar stated it closes at 9.30. Why? We decided that our custom wasn’t seemingly that welcome, so we walked into the village for dinner and a few drinks. The room was basic and actually quite cold. The bath towel was more like a hand towel. The shower was nothing more than a trickle. Generally the room needed updating.

“It was a pleasant venue, however it just needs a little more oomph to make it a great destination.”

The location is excellent, shielded within a wooded enclosure with ample rear grounds. The property itself is very pleasing due to the faux Tudor design of this late Victorian era property. At the time we were met by the reception desk there was a polite but formal greeting. We anticipated a “welcome to” type of scenario but this did not happen. It is apparent that there is not a lot of ongoing maintenance at this property. All of our lower slimlite double‑glazed sealed units had “blown” and were misted. The only way to see the rear grounds was to fully open the windows.

“A gem of a hotel with rustic charm and good food”

I prefer to stay in places with character and charm. It had a comfortable bar area and the dining room had nicely spaced out tables. The small double bedroom No 6 was clean with a shower room and excellent value for money. There was an excellent selection for the evening meal and we all chose a curry. We all agreed that the food was excellent in taste, presentation and value for money. The same could be said for breakfast. I’m a great believer in you get what you pay for and in this instance it would be unfair to complain about anything and will hope to stay again next year

I chose this old Tudor‑style place for the vibe and its spot, and it did deliver a charming, well‑lit garden at night. The building looks like it needs a fresh coat of paint and the damp smell was strong enough that the heating kicked on at 6:30 even though it was hot outside, and dehumidifiers were running in the hallway. It’s a decent spot for a quick overnight stay, but the shower’s water pressure was weak and it took about 30 minutes to fill the tub with just 3 inches of water.
