The architecture was beautiful and the rooms were large, so it could have been a great stay at the right time, but it wasn’t for us. We were greeted warmly by the host Lloyd, who showed us to our room, but after a while, when we were settled, it turned out to be the wrong room. We were moved to another room, and everything was confusing because that one was also wrong. We ended up staying where we were, but that wasn’t ideal. Eventually we talked to the owner, explained the situation, and we could stay in our room for 1000Zar instead of 2000Zar (the issue was resolved, but the arrival was disorganized and unclear, especially for a “luxe retreat” that cost a lot). In the most expensive room, which was truly stunning, a lot of workers appeared on the property and even stayed there. They were loud and smoking, walking past our room until late at night; our bathroom had no curtains, so we couldn’t shower or use our own toilet without being seen. We hoped to sleep, maybe read a bit, but at 7:00 the first workers were already moving loudly under the window, and it was unclear who they were or what they were doing. It’s probably a recording moment, I would have liked to come back, but not after this experience.

The spot is stunning—mountain views, trees, birds. The forest hut (comfort king room) lived up to its description: plain, simple, but cozy. The downside is the bathroom is outside and the flimsy plastic shower curtain offers no privacy in the shower or bath. There’s no coffee, rooibos tea, or milk left in the room, and nowhere to find out where to refill drinking water. Breakfast is self‑serve with a single pan of scrambled eggs or shashuka, muesli, yoghurt, a bowl of fruit, and bread; again no rooibos tea or staff to request it. The check‑in desk is never staffed—even during check‑in or check‑out. No extra services were offered, and we had to call to ask where to leave the keys, only to receive very rude communication. At first glance it seemed like a top‑end venue, but it missed the little touches that would make a stay—especially a wedding anniversary—special.

“Amazing tranquility!!”

The location, bathroom, and bed are all solid. Breakfast could use a bit more creativity with the eggs. On the second morning we got boiled eggs, sourdough bread, and avocado, but it felt dry.

“A hidden gem.”

Phakalane Retreat is one of those hidden gems we felt lucky to find. We were tucked away in a harmonious, peaceful, quiet, safe place. There are lovely walking trails inside and outside the property. We booked for four days to be near the shops, but decided not to shop at all and instead enjoy the beauty of our surroundings. The staff were very friendly, and we enjoyed the fresh fruits and egg dishes for breakfast. The house was warm and cozy with a fireplace. The bed was comfortable with an electric blanket, and the room had a heater for the cold, wet nights. We’ll definitely return because it was also affordable. Thank you Phakalane Retreat—we really enjoyed our stay. Nothing negative at all.

“Incredible beautiful property and rooms that guarantee a relaxed and tranquil stay surrounded by nature.”

The location is beautiful—surrounded by nature with a stunning design. The staff are super welcoming and friendly. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the mattresses are very comfortable, even featuring bed warmers. I loved the bathtub and open shower (shower gel provided, but no shampoo or conditioner). Breakfast is fantastic. There’s also an option to use the outdoor sauna and cold plunge for a small fee. Plenty of outdoor spaces to work and relax from. The temple is beautiful and great for yoga and similar activities.
