We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Amsterdam and overall it was a great experience: the building is gorgeous, service was usually top‑class, and nearly every detail lived up to the brand’s reputation. The only downside was a serious billing mishap at the end of our visit. I had paid the entire stay in advance before arriving, and at check‑in I was asked to give a credit card for a €200 security deposit, to which I made it clear that no extra charge should be applied since the room was already settled. About 24 hours later I discovered that the full amount of our stay had been charged again to my card without permission, effectively double‑billing us. When I brought this to the staff’s attention, the charge was refunded, but the response was simply, “It was a mistake.” Even when I asked what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed the charge, the answer was again, “It was a mistake.” Mistakes happen, but an unauthorized duplicate charge of the entire stay—especially after a guest has explicitly confirmed that the reservation is paid—raises serious concerns about the hotel’s payment procedures. The refund was processed quickly, which I appreciate, but at this level of service guests expect their cards to be handled with absolute care and that charges are made only with proper authorization. Other than that incident, the stay was genuinely excellent.
