We found this homestay on Booking. The owner is a Malaysian Chinese, and he and his son both speak Chinese and are very warm. On the first noon we arrived, they gave each of us a bucket of instant noodles, a bottle of beer, and a bag of peanuts for lunch. The homestay is manned 24 hours by a Malaysian elderly couple who don’t speak Chinese but can manage simple English and are very friendly. Whenever we asked for bottled water or toilet paper, they would bring it quickly. They also helped us freeze seafood we bought at the market in their home freezer behind the homestay. The homestay offers a king‑size room and a twin‑bed room. The twin‑bed room on the road side has a balcony where you can hang clothes, and there is a clothes rack inside. The homestay does not provide disposable toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, or body wash, nor slippers; only a small bar of soap and towels are supplied. The room has air conditioning, a TV, an electric kettle, a hair dryer, and an electric iron. The homestay is about 4 km from Xianbenna’s tourist departure pier; a taxi to the pier normally costs 6 MYR, and a return taxi usually costs under 10 MYR. The homestay sits on the second floor of a row of houses, with a supermarket and two restaurants on the first floor. A wedding‑themed restaurant about 100 m across the road from the homestay is worth recommending; the décor is very thoughtful, the food tastes good, the portions are moderate, and most importantly they will prepare the fish, shrimp, etc. we bought from the Xianbenna seafood market for us, and the processing fee is 15 MYR. We stayed at the homestay for three nights. From Tawau Airport to the homestay we used a Grab car, a newer pickup that seats four in the front and has an open cargo area in the back for luggage. The trip is about 57 km and takes roughly an hour, costing 79 MYR. Because the homestay’s location was unclear, we couldn’t find it initially; we asked the driver to call the owner, and he brought us to the correct place. The driver was friendly, and we tipped him a small amount on Grab. His phone number is 0198317677. The driver we found from the homestay’s other end of the row of houses while eating at a restaurant there spoke English and offered to take us to Tawau Airport for 80 MYR in a newer car. His phone number is 0103765086. I suggest that friends coming from China to Malaysia buy a Hotlink SIM from a Malaysian telecom company. I bought a 15‑day Hotlink SIM on Taobao for 62.9 RMB, activated it two days in advance, and could use it immediately upon arrival in Malaysia; daily data is unlimited, calls and SMS to Malaysia are free, and the signal is good in Kuala Lumpur, Xianbenna, and Kota Kinabalu (Genting). In addition to Bang Bang Island, there is also signal on Tiang Bar and Madai Island. The main advantage of this card is that it allows calls, which is very convenient because you often need to contact hotels, homestays, drivers, and travel agencies directly. After arriving in Malaysia I found a Hotlink one‑month SIM for sale at 32 MYR, about 49 RMB. The only downside was the lack of body wash and shampoo, and the pier was a bit far.
