The location was great, but I was exhausted and needed some TLC; the food was subpar—only burgers for dinner and the breakfast used obviously cheap ingredients.

The room was roomy, the bed comfortable, and the food tasted good, yet the shower was freezing and the TV was awful.

The pub was charming but suffered from poor housekeeping and care; the food was good, the bed comfy, and the view lovely, yet it clearly needed repairs and a proper cleaning schedule for staff. The staff ignored my request for smaller portions on the first night, and I explained the issue. Breakfast was cooked but I asked if it was actually Cumberland sausage, and was told it was—yet it was greasy, full of fat and gristle, and the plate was swimming in grease. I was offered toast afterward and the staff forgot the beans. Light switches throughout the hotel were covered in dirty greasy finger marks, as were the handrails on the stairs and door handles. The skirtings and edges of the room carpet were dirty, the furniture was dusty, and there was stale water left in the kettle that smelled like it had been there a while; it took three boils to eliminate the smell. Both the bathroom and bedroom windows required serious repair, with frayed and worn sashes that were also dirty and dusty.

The place was old.

The staff were friendly and helped with luggage; breakfast was decent but dinner was too stodgy for me, mostly pizzas and wraps with few other options, and the menus were scruffy. There was a good quiz one night. The building is centuries old and needs a lot of upgrading, which will probably happen. I would stay again, especially since the manager was very helpful. The menu needs an upgrade and reprinting.
