Located on historic Government Hill in Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, the Galleon House Hotel is a charming bed and breakfast built in 1852. This 19th-century property features a freshwater pool with sundeck, air-conditioned rooms with cable TV, and a daily home-cooked breakfast on the veranda. Nearby attractions include Fort Christian, Mangrove Lagoon, and Historic Hassel Island, with Cyril E King Airport a 10-minute drive away.

I was excited about the location near the beach, but the whole entrance process felt like a heist: the owner’s gate was locked, the remote was left in a key box, and we had to exit with our luggage as if we were thieves. The building hasn’t been renovated in 30 years, and the constant roar of planes from the airport keeps you awake. The shower water drips cold, and the pool is still under renovation.

The place is close to everything, but there were way too many stairs and spider webs in front of my door, and the door was hard to lock, at least in my room.
