The sheets appeared clean. We passed the Kingston “Regency” Inn many times trying to locate it, as all branding except for “The Venue Uptown” has been removed from the building and signage, and it sits behind a scenic chain pizzeria, between the beautiful Eospus Creek and an active railroad track. For no particular reason, the room rate tripled on the date of my reservation, so this review is for a $349 room, which would set high expectations. After parking in a thoroughly potholed and poorly lit lot, and walking into a poorly renovated vestibule and lobby, I collected my room keys amid the noise of a Hispanic wedding reception at the hotel bar. From there we walked through dingy, poorly lit, smoke‑reeking hallways that could have been painted better to evoke an evil atmosphere, and upon finding our room, we shuffled over the threadbare carpet into the room, greeted by the chirp of a dying smoke detector, which was hanging off the wall only by its electrical wires. The hotel immediately moved us to a new room, and while walking there, no less than half a dozen similar chirps came from other rooms. The new room was free of that annoying tone, but the air conditioner howled like a freight train all night, which I decided was worth enduring over searching for a third room. My sister had read that the hotel had a game room with a pool table, so we set off to find it armed with the borderline nonsensical evacuation map given at the front desk, which placed the “games area” vaguely in the middle of all the rooms. After much wandering, and seeing no signage for a game room, we tried the door to the pool room and emerged into a vast darkened room, with balconies opening into it.
