“Quirky property and super friendly host”
The bedroom offered an amazing view, Elizabeth was very friendly, the bed was super comfy, and the room had everything we needed. The chickens were a bonus, and the unfinished road didn’t bother us. Unfortunately, it rained all day on one of the days, and the main part of the kitchen is a few steps outside, which made it tricky if you wanted to cook more than with a microwave; it didn’t stop me from coming back, though.
“Secluded getaway - perfect to recharge one’s batteries”
Elizabeth has turned this hilltop spot into an incredibly peaceful and charming retreat with breathtaking views. The only issue is the very long unsealed road leading to the property, which at times feels quite narrow but is still manageable.
“beautiful place”
An absolutely beautiful little corner of the world that my boyfriend and I fell in love with. Elizabeth was incredibly friendly, and we even got to meet the chickens. It felt very private, letting us cook and relax while still being a good distance from Paihia and Russell for day trips. Definitely recommend—5 stars.
A cozy cabin with a completely stunning view of the river, mountains, and forest, and the chickens visiting the terrace was a nice touch. The silence is so deep you only hear birdsong. The only downside is the winding, narrow gravel road you have to drive to get there—either a 10 km gravel stretch to the main road or a 5 km gravel drive plus a ferry.
If you want a secluded, quiet hilltop hideaway surrounded by native bush and an amazing view of a tidal inlet, this is it. The place comes with everything you could need, from coffee pods to electric blankets, and it’s so cozy and quiet you can hear your own breath at night. I even heard a kiwi call—or maybe it was a mad cow? They sound surprisingly similar! Russell is just 20 minutes away, and friendly chickens will pop by to see if you have snacks. A charming slice of New Zealand heaven.
