The Sofia Hotel

“Nice area, lovely ambience but not a great room. Will not return.”

The property had a great vibe—very atmospheric and spooky, with dim lighting and eerie hallways that I loved. However, the King suite I booked had a single bedroom and bathroom, and the floors were filthy, covered in hair from the previous guest. A wad as big as my hand lay by the door, suggesting the cleaner didn't vacuum properly. The vents were dirty, the bedroom vent barely worked, and it was clogged with grime that triggered an allergic reaction, making it hard to breathe—especially for me with sensitive airways, so I ended up sleeping on the couch while my partner used the bed. The room was also uncomfortably hot; even though San Diego is warm, the cooling system couldn't keep it cool.

The hotel sits in a prime spot, just a short walk from the bay, and you can easily hop on trains or public buses to reach various attractions. The only hiccup was the sofa bed in my room, which felt a bit uncomfortable.

I liked the location and appreciated that the hotel has a historic feel. Unfortunately, the room was dusty on the walls and corners, looked very dated, and needed upgrades; it just didn't feel clean.
