“Overall, would stay again, but am not sure what we would do differently as only the staff had control over these situati”
The hotel is a lovely, older property that’s very well maintained and sits in a good “middle” location in Zermatt. Our issue was the room’s location and the staff’s attitude when we asked about it. The housekeeping and most of the staff were very nice. However, there was significant miscommunication about the room “description” and the services available during our stay. We booked—and paid significantly extra for—a “Matterhorn view” room that had NO view of the mountain because a large pine tree (and, though not the hotel’s fault, construction/crane activity) blocked the view from what appeared to be only our room. We raised the “view” issue immediately upon check‑in and were told in a very stern and direct way that nothing could be done and that the room we were assigned was in fact a Matterhorn view room (which it absolutely was not). This, combined with our smoking neighbors (with almost no barrier between balconies), made our balcony virtually unusable. Also, when we checked in, we both heard the desk clerk explain the hotel amenities and NEITHER ONE OF US HEARD that breakfast was included in our stay, so for our 4‑day stay we did not know it was included. When we discovered we had missed breakfasts, the same desk clerk argued that he “told us” when we checked in. We understand the cultural differences between the U.S. and Switzerland, as we both worked for the same Swiss company for over a decade, so these issues were not a language barrier. Fortunately, our Matterhorn experience and the rest of our Zermatt stay were great, so we just chalked this one up as a bad circumstance.
