Our host was friendly and gave great dinner recommendations; she even called and made a reservation so we could dine at our preferred time. We had one windy night, and because the building is old, the windows rattled, waking us up. The host offered other room options, but we preferred our original room.

“Stately and comfortable”

The spot’s location and vistas are stunning, and the house itself is gorgeous with rooms that are both large and supremely comfy. Susan greeted us warmly and was very helpful. Everything else was fine.

“Beautiful stay for the last leg of our trip!”

We wrapped up a fantastic 16‑day New Zealand adventure at this lovely historic lodge, which turned out to be the perfect finale. The rooms were roomy and incredibly cozy; we stayed in the Albatross room, which had a king bed that was a dream. Early the next morning we caught a breathtaking sunrise from our windows overlooking the water, and the view from our room was simply beautiful. Our host suggested the seafood spot Carey Bay, and we fell in love with it so much that we dined there both nights. I never expected to adore both Monk and Elephant Fish, but they were superb, and the generous servings of local vegetables were a highlight.

The place was clean, the staff friendly, and the view was great. The only downside was the lack of nearby food options.

The historic property is lovely, well furnished, and well maintained. It sits close to a busy main road with heavy freight traffic to and from Port Chalmers, and it’s also near a rail line where container wagons pass during the night.
