The owner was incredibly friendly and the food tasted pretty good, but the room was very basic and my roommates were rather loud, so overall it was a mixed experience.

We had a very bad experience and considered paying for a new place even though we had already booked here; the staff were friendly, yet the standard was far below acceptable. The bedding had stains and many small hairs, making it very unhygienic. Smoking was allowed indoors, and cigarette butts lay on the floor upon arrival. Service and leftover food from the previous evening were still present, attracting cockroaches and rats, which we saw several times on the hotel. The bathroom was also in disrepair: the drain didn’t work, so water filled the entire bathing area and you had to wade through it to reach the toilet. It was very disgusting when you had to swim in foreign bath water to get to the toilet. All in all, the stay felt like pure survival; we cannot recommend the place.

The owner’s helpfulness and friendly, open attitude are simply great; the location is unbeatable, central, and the bed is super cozy. The building is old, Mr. Strong renovates everything himself, piece by piece; there are still spots that need improvement, but the owner is already working on it and you can see how much heart he puts into the project.

We arrived late, but Mr. Strong greeted us warmly, making us feel at home right away; his open, honest, and down‑to‑earth personality made the stay truly special—exactly the kind of host you hope to find when traveling. A word of advice: book tours and bus tickets directly through Mr. Strong; we mistakenly used another provider and regretted it. He knows the area, is honest about what’s worth it, and you can trust his recommendations—no gimmicks, no upselling. If you’re staying in Phong Nha, The Palm Lodge is the place to be; Mr. Strong is the real deal.
