“For the price you pay , what you get is very good all things considered.”
The Farmhouse Inn lives up to its description and my review aligns with most others. The rural Essex setting is very pleasant, and my son and I were attending the airshow at RAF Duxford, so the proximity was convenient. The hotel is a little outside Thaxted, a lovely village. The rooms are very clean, the beds comfortable and tidy, and the bathrooms are equally clean. The decor feels a bit dated, and the walls are thin—so I always travel with an eye mask and ear plugs, and I’m amazed at those who don’t. If you’re paying under £100 per night in 2026, I can’t see how you’d expect more. The bar is decent with a good selection of taps, and the dinner food is classic pub grub but nothing fancy; the portions are generous and the food is well cooked. Service from Anna, who handled dinner, reception, breakfast, and the bar, was great. Breakfast was very good and good value. Thanks, Anna. I would stay again at this price point, and I think spending a few grand on some new paint would be worthwhile; otherwise the tiredness becomes tatty and people are less forgiving. Overall, a really positive stay.
