The property is absolutely beautiful, the room, onsens, and service were all brilliant. It was a very intimate, small, and unique experience. Sadly the food wasn’t to our liking! You need a very adventurous palate; however, this wasn’t the host’s fault as it was traditional food. They even accommodated a western breakfast the next day!

Yama no chaya is an incredible ryokan! My husband and I stayed there for our honeymoon and had an amazing experience. It's a 15 min walk from Hakone Yumoto station or a 5 min bus ride, which helped with our arrival, departure, and getting around for the Hakone Loop. When we arrived, it was raining and the staff met us on the bridge, helped with our luggage, and handed us umbrellas. The property is clean, cozy, and calm. Their bar and public onsens offer lovely views and a great atmosphere. It was the calm we needed after a hectic time in other parts of Japan. The woman who took care of us—setting up our breakfast and kaiseki, bringing drinks, and ensuring we enjoyed our stay—was extremely accommodating and a wonderful host. The food was delicious and we were full after each meal. The view from our room was magical, watching the rain and looking out at the trees on the mountainside. The private onsen in our room was also incredible! The sliding doors opened fully to the same green mountain view, which was very serene. When it was time to leave, it was raining and finding a taxi was difficult, so the owner personally drove us to the station—going above and beyond our expectations. Yama no chaya made our honeymoon unforgettable and I would highly recommend it to others.

Yama no Chaya is a relaxing and more traditional ryokan experience great for experiencing a more private and personalized Kaiseki experience. For anyone wanting a fantastic stay in their first ryokan, this is an experience that can't be missed. Yama no Chaya has private onsens (ofuro) in rooms as well as traditional tatami mat layout rooms which are both for private dining and also sleeping on futons. Enjoy a multi-course kaiseki meal in the comfort of your own room prepared by professional japanese cuisine trained staff and personalized pacing. Breakfast is equally stunning with preparations of traditional japanese breakfast cuisine. Overall, the service, the location, and the entire experience of Yama no Chaya is top notch. There is really nothing that my family didn't like about the experience. If anything we would only wish we could have stayed longer
