Hotel Alpha, a restored 19th‑century villa in Sant’Agnello, offers 4‑star elegance amid fragrant citrus groves and exotic gardens. A large pool, terrace bar with views of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, and a restaurant serving regional, Italian, and international cuisine enhance the stay. Rooms feature balconies or patios, satellite TV, and optional hydromassage showers.

The renovated room is modern, clean, and the vibe is very friendly. The staff are charming. However, the value for money is terrible (I paid 600 euros per night for three people), and the location is impossible without a car. No taxis are available and those that are are overpriced (between 25 and 30 euros to go to Sorente!). The train and bus are unreliable (the bus may never arrive and both can be full). The walk is only 2.5 km, but when it’s hot with a child and someone over 65, it took us an hour… A shuttle several times a day would have already improved the experience a lot. The pool was cold in September and it’s deep, so my 10‑year‑old child couldn’t play in it. There’s nothing to see nearby within walking distance.

The hotel has a small courtyard, is clean and tidy, and the service is very enthusiastic. You need to prepare consumables in advance, though.

We chose Hotel Alpha due to its proximity to Sant Agnello station as we intended to visit Herculaneum and Pompeii during our short stay. The room was large with a balcony that faced the sea (which was further away than we thought from the website) but it was great to watch the sun going down from inside our air-conditioned room and see Vesuvius through the trees. The bathroom was a good size and everything was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was great with many different options to choose from (Tiramisu for breakfast? Why not!) We also ate out in the fruit grove two nights - the pizzas were delicious. The staff are friendly and helped us book taxis on several occasions. It was a short train ride or a 25-minute walk into Sorrento which is a lovely town to visit. For a birthday meal we went to the nearby coast at Marinella for a super meal over-looking the sea and that sunset at Paravisiello Bar & Restaurant. The loud music until 11.30 one evening for a large coach party, this was followed up by 30-minutes of local fireworks until midnight (not much the hotel could do about that!). We also could not dine in the main restaurant one night as the coach party had its own event. There is a flight of steps to get into the reception which one of our group found difficult after a long day out, especially when the lift was out of action and we were on the second floor! Prices in the Sorrento area are expensive and Hotel Alpha cost considerably more per night than we would normally pay even though it is some distance from the town centre. The temperatures were in the mid-30s and there wasn't even a complimentary bottle of water in the room, like so many other places we have stayed at, but a small bottle in the fridge cost 2 euros when the supermarket up the road sells 2L bottles at 1.50eu. In summary it was a good place to stay but for the price it didn't have the wow factor
