The spot was spot on, and the breakfast was solid, though I had to shell out extra since it wasn't in the room rate. The place stayed spotless, but the price felt steep, probably because I booked during the SMM fair when rates jump a lot.

The location in a historic building was very good, the breakfast was good, the staff were very helpful from the cocktail waiter with spontaneous bursts of Nessun Dorma and at reception where I was assisted to buy a ticket to Lion King, but the room lacked air‑conditioning when the daytime temperature reached 35 °C, a heat wave that persisted for three weeks in Germany, which is less a heat wave than the new post‑climate‑change normal; at Palaise Esplanade my room had a pedestal fan that I placed in front of an open window to direct air in.

The hotel reception was very nice, the rooms were wonderful, quiet and central.

The place was quiet and comfortable, but there were several steps to reach the elevator.

The hotel sits in a very central spot, just 15 minutes from the train station and around the corner from the Binnenalster. The staff at the nearby Baseler Hof, where check‑in and breakfast are handled, were extremely friendly. Our room, number 281, was a dreamy design space. We got three days of free public transport and a minibar that included a carafe of brandy, making the price‑performance ratio very good. When breakfast hit peak times, the buffet became cramped and uncomfortable, so arriving before 9 am is best. Unfortunately the roof terrace was closed, and the sauna felt a bit neglected—though it worked, it only had three loungers and was quite small.
