Palazzo Del Sale, a boutique hotel in Ortigia’s historic center, offers six spacious, individually styled rooms with high ceilings, stone walls, and local lava stone and terracotta bathrooms. Many rooms feature terraces, satellite TV, air conditioning, and minibars. Located near Piazza Duomo, Aretusa Fountain, Maniace Castle, and the Lungomare promenade, it caters to long stays.

The place was in an excellent spot, just a 3‑minute walk to Cathedral Square. It was quiet at night, but we were there during the off‑peak season; it could get noisy during peak season because there’s a bar right below our balcony. We had breakfast at the property’s bar—coffee, croissant, orange juice. Giovanni, the owner, was a great host and very helpful. The mattress on our bed was very soft, but that’s just me since I prefer a firmer one.

The room surpassed my expectations: large and beautifully decorated. The bathroom was good, with lovely finishes and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was very good, with nice croissants and sometimes delicious Sicilian pastries. The best part for me was the beach at the end of the road where you can snorkel and watch the sunrise every morning; this is, in my opinion, non‑pareil. The only slight annoyance was bottles being emptied into and out of bins on the street below in the early evening as restaurants close and later in the morning; there’s not much the owner can do about that since it’s a restaurant and bar district and everyone drinks a lot of wine and water, so the refuse is dominated by noisy glass items. The cure was easily found: earphones and playing music to myself solved the noise surprises. There isn’t really a reception, so when I arrived a bit earlier than I thought I would, I had to wait for the bar to open on the corner and WhatsApp the owner to be let into the room. But there was a comfortable lounge and free tea to drink while waiting, so that wasn’t a bad experience. The owner is shy and quite proud in an Italian or Sicilian way, so not gushy or obsequious or smiling all the time, but this wasn’t offensive to me.

Central location very convenient. Historic building. Poor attention to detail (scratched and stained walls, dated bathroom). Some photos do not precisely match reality.

The location cannot be beat. We loved this cozy home away from home. My family stayed in three of the six rooms and felt like it was our own place. The little balconies/terraces were lovely. Giovanni is a wonderful host. He makes a great cup of coffee! The in‑room AC unit was a little leaky, but we let Giovanni know about it.
