Traveling off‑season meant the onsen was just us with no other guests, but the town’s end feels a bit quiet.

The owner was genuinely friendly and helped us around town, picking us up at the bus stop, offering rides to our ski rental, and dropping us back at the end of the trip. He showed us good restaurants and the shuttle schedule to the resort, and I laughed at the many English signs he puts up. He also has a speaker system in the ryokan for announcements. He was flexible when we were late in telling him we wanted breakfast the next day. Breakfast was consistently good and balanced. The ryokan sits a short uphill walk from Karasawa ski area, so we could take a lift to Nagasaka, and it’s close to the town shuttle and a pleasant walk to downtown. The onsen was nice with two shower spots. Our room and futons were clean and comfortable, and the sink in the room let us brush teeth and wash hands without leaving. A spacious dry-room was handy for gear, and I was surprised the ryokan even has an elevator! On the downside, sharing slippers felt unclean, and the stacked slippers touch each other, so your feet might end up dirty. The second‑floor bathroom had a urine smell. The onsen entrance used flimsy curtains, making some feel insecure about unclothing, especially women. All the signs can be confusing because there are so many. The speaker‑phone system sometimes turns on without the owner noticing; you can hear it activate, but all you get is background noise.

We absolutely loved everything at Kadowakikan. The manager/owner was incredibly helpful and made us feel at home.
