“Historic fortress with great service from the staff”
Our stay in this historic fortress was unique. We were the only guests so the ambience was a little overwhelming, the service and our evening meal was excellent

Herrliche historische Festung - man fühlt sich fürstlich gebettet

The property was amazing – a must‑stay. The only issue was that we couldn’t find any vegetarian options, so we had to drive into a nearby town for dinner; we would have preferred to just relax and enjoy the experience.

The setting was unheard of! The food was incredible… Nothing else to add.

If you value a quiet spot in a simply stunning property, this is it. Getting to our room felt like an adventure: two spiral staircases, a beautiful pool table, and a cloistered balcony. No lift, so heavy, bulky luggage could be a challenge. The room was simple but high quality – the shower and bathroom were superb, the super king bed was very comfortable. The staff were very helpful and considerate. Two young ladies ran reception and then served us dinner, a simple menu for €43 each plus wine. I went road cycling during our stay and there are great routes, rolling countryside, though some roads around the town and its approaches are quite busy. On the second night we went into Le Puy en Velay and ate at the superb restaurant L’Ecu D’Or, kindly booked for us by the staff. Overall, we would rate Chateau St. Vidal as a very special, unusual venue and would thoroughly recommend it. Nothing really negative.
