Located in Edinburgh's historic New Town, the Thistle Hotel is a Georgian building on a quiet street, 700 meters from Haymarket Rail Station. The hotel features individually styled rooms with digital TVs, in-room safes, and private bathrooms with towel warmers and toiletries. Some rooms offer views of Edinburgh Castle. The evening staff were friendly, but the basement floor had water damage and the broken bed in room 29 was a real hassle.

The location was the only redeeming factor; everything else was a disaster. The rooms were so cold we slept in our coats and pulled the duvet over our faces to stay warm. After returning from Scotland, we were ill because of the chill. We complained about the heating, and the staff said extra heaters could be supplied if needed—implying the room wasn’t warm enough to begin with. When we came back that night, the rooms were still like walk‑in freezers and no heaters had appeared. I went to reception to find out, and they claimed the heating would activate at 8 PM. By 9 PM the rooms were still freezing, and the radiators were barely lukewarm. I had to go back to reception, furious, and give the staff a stern lecture because the whole situation felt like blatant mismanagement. It was absurd that we had to argue and beg for basic heating. After that confrontation, we finally received a single portable heater for my parents’ room. The fact that we had to fight so hard for one small heater is disgraceful. The heating issue was only the beginning: the bedsheets were stained, the spare pillow was covered in green mold, and rust was leaking from the bathroom fixtures. The overall cleanliness and hygiene were appalling. It’s hard to believe a hotel would allow rooms to be in such a disgusting state. A room should at least be warm, clean, and suitable for sleeping, but this place failed on all three fronts. Instead of enjoying our stay, we spent it freezing, complaining, arguing with reception, and worrying about the appalling conditions.

A historic spot with a large, quiet room, good breakfast, and friendly staff. The building is quite worn, with old windows, old furniture, occasional dust, and the smell of an old structure. The bed was comfortable, the duvets warm, and the price was reasonable for a central location. If you demand perfection, this isn’t the place. For less picky guests, the overall experience justifies the cost.

A charming hotel with great staff. The room was comfortable, very clean, and the location was excellent. However, I booked without breakfast but was told it was included, only to find out later that I had been charged extra, which was disappointing.
