Hotel Alia sits close to the city centre on a quiet street near the beach. It feels like a welcoming oasis in Djibouti, and Oma, the lady who manages guests during the day, is warm, kind and makes you feel safe and at home. The room is clean, with crisp linen and cold air‑conditioning. Breakfast is simple but filling, with eggs, bread, pastry, tea, coffee and juice. Next door is a restaurant serving delicious local cuisine, very convenient, and a small shop next to that for bits and bobs. Thank you Alia for your wonderful hospitality and memorable stay.

The price matched what I got, but because it was cheap I didn’t expect much and the mattress was painfully hard, leaving me sore the next morning; the shower room was also tiny, which was a clear drawback.

The location is good, walkable to the city centre, with coffee and local croissant for breakfast, and the reception staff are friendly. There was no soap and no toilet paper, so I had to buy those myself. It wasn’t very clean. The fan is very noisy, and because there are no open windows I have to switch it on and off regularly during the night. The hotel owner supports dictators and wars.

The staff are nice, the local breakfast is good, the A/C works, and it offers relatively good value for money in this very expensive country. The bathroom could be better – there’s no shower gel or shampoo, and the water in the shower is salty.
