Ariki Backpackers sits on New Plymouth’s west coast, a 100‑metre walk from shops, pubs and the bus terminal. The hostel features a communal kitchen, guest lounge with satellite TV, large outdoor patio and BBQ, internet, DVD library, laundry, and a tour desk arranging mountain, surf, farm, seal and cultural tours. Dorms and private rooms, including gender‑specific options, are available.

I appreciated the heads up about the noise on Friday and Saturday nights. The staff member who greeted me was knowledgeable and friendly. I realize most backpackers travel without a vehicle, but a heads up about available parking in the area would have influenced my decision to stay here.

The washer and dryer are free, which I find very rare for a hostel but great!

The proximity to public bus, food places, beaches & seas, museum, the property’s facilities, and the staff’s friendliness all made me want to choose Ariki Backpackers again next time.
