Alor Setar

Alor Setar is the royal capital of Kedah, defined by paddy fields that stretch right to its urban edges. Alor Setar was founded in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II as the eighth administrative seat of the Kedah Sultanate. River geography made it a natural trade node, but also exposed it to repeated invasions from Siam throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. British administration arrived under the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty, leaving brick administrative offices beside traditional royal structures.
