Bacalar sits on a 42-kilometer long freshwater lagoon fed by underground cenotes. Bacalar’s kitchen reflects its regional place in Quintana Roo, balancing Yucatecan slow-roasted pork dishes with seafood sourced from the Caribbean coast and citrus marinades. You find upscale plant-focused dining alongside traditional street carts surrounding the main square. Bacalar began as Sian Ka'an Bakhalal, a Maya settlement recorded around 435 AD. Spanish forces conquered the area in 1543, but English pirates repeatedly looted the outpost via the Hondo River and Pirate Channel. The Spanish built Fort San Felipe in 1733 to secure trade. During the 1848 Caste War, Maya rebels captured the town, controlling it until Mexican federal troops retook it in 1901.

Bacalar has no municipal bus line. You move around town on foot, by rental bicycle, or by taking local green-and-white taxis. Navigating the lagoon requires non-motorized watercraft or licensed tour sailings.

• Shared vans to Chetumal leave continuously from Calle 22 when full for 50 MXN per seat.

Prices in Bacalar are higher than neighbouring inland Quintana Roo towns, but significantly lower than Cancun or Tulum. Carry sufficient cash, as small vendors and water taxis rarely take cards and local ATMs frequently run out of bills on weekends.
