Eugene

Track town running, craft breweries, and timber country.

introduction

Overview

Eugene spreads across the southern Willamette Valley, shaped by the McKenzie and Willamette rivers. It functions as a university town, a distance-running hub, and a centre for Oregon craft beer. You move best here on foot or by bike, using paved bank trails that keep motor traffic at a distance. Expect wet winters, clear summer days, and strong local opinions on running gear and pinot noir.

Track Town USA status

Hayward Field hosts Olympic track trials and world championships. The venue launched modern U.S. distance running and Nike's original waffle shoe experiments.

River trail navigation trick

The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path uses four footbridges to loop both banks of the Willamette. You can run or ride 12 miles without crossing a vehicle lane.

history

A short history

Eugene developed on Kalapuya ancestral land around Eugene Skinner's 1846 trading post. Timber driving on the Willamette River and railroad links established the settlement as a regional commercial hub by the late nineteenth century. The establishment of the University of Oregon in 1876 shifted the city's character toward education and research. In the 1970s, track coach Bill Bowerman and distance runner Steve Prefontaine transformed Eugene into the focal point of American distance running, cementing its sports heritage.
