Hermanus

Hermanus sits on Walker Bay, 120 kilometres southeast of Cape Town. You navigate the town along a 12-kilometre cliff path that connects rocky coves to sweeping beaches. Southern right whales shelter offshore from June through November, while the Hemel-en-Aarde valley behind town produces Pinot Noir.

Walker Bay seafood dominates local menus, led by abalone, black mussels, and grilled kingklip. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley produces notable Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which local restaurants pair directly with daily ocean catches. Dining directly overlooking the sea comes with a markup, so moving two blocks inland yields better cooking for lower prices.

Hermanus Pieters, a Dutch schoolteacher, tracked livestock to a fresh spring near the shore in the early 1830s. Fishing families followed his path and established a permanent settlement called Hermanuspietersfontein. The name was shortened to Hermanus in 1902 when official postal routes demanded brevity.
