Hoedspruit

The operational hub for Greater Kruger and the escarpment.

introduction

Overview

Hoedspruit sits directly between the private reserves of Greater Kruger and the cliffs of the Klein Drakensberg. It is a working safari town where rangers, pilots, and researchers buy supplies alongside visiting travelers. You move through it by car, using its single main strip to stock up on fuel, cash, and gear. Expect open bushveld, fenced estates, and daily wildlife traffic.

Arrival via Eastgate Airport

Airlink flies daily into Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS), located on an active military base. Your lodge driver waits outside the single terminal.

Protected biosphere

The town sits within the UNESCO-designated Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region. Unfenced private game reserves border the municipal limits.

Self-drive gate access

Buy your reserve entry permits at gate check-points in cash or by card. Klaserie and Timbavati gates enforce strict entry times after dark.

food

Lowveld beef, game cuts, and bush pubs

Eating in Hoedspruit revolves around wood fires, high-protein game meat, and cold lager. The town operates on a safari schedule, so kitchens open early for coffee and close earlier than in coastal cities. Local butcheries process kudu, eland, and impala into dry-cured biltong and droëwors daily. Evening dining stays casual, centered on steakhouses and open-air pub gardens.

Game biltong, cured and spiced in town, is the standard safari trail snack.

  • Order local game cuts

Kudu fillet and venison potjiekos are standard on local menus. Venison stays lean, so ask for it cooked medium-rare.

  • Mind the safari dinner hours

Kitchens in town often take last food orders by 20:30. Plan your meals early if returning from a late afternoon game drive.

  • Stock up at specialized butcheries

Pick up spiced biltong at the Hoedspruit Biltong Hut before heading into reserves where commercial shops do not exist.

history

A short history

Hoedspruit grew around a farm named in 1844 when trekker Dawid Johannes de Beer dropped his hat into the flooded Zandspruit river. The arrival of the Selati railway in 1910 connected this remote lowveld outpost to gold mines and ports. In 1978, the South African Air Force opened AFB Hoedspruit, cementing the town's strategic role. Cattle farms gradually removed their internal fences to create the Greater Kruger conservation space.

AFB Hoedspruit opens as a major military airfield, bringing infrastructure, runways, and military personnel.

  3. 1993

    Fences come down

Private reserves remove boundary fences with Kruger National Park, creating an open wildlife ecosystem.

transport

Getting around

Public transit does not exist in Hoedspruit. You must rent a car at the airport or organize lodge transfers prior to landing. Main paved roads link the town to reserve gates, but dirt tracks inside reserves require high-clearance vehicles.

  • A 2WD sedan works on town tarmac, but an SUV or 4x4 handles gravel park roads better after rain.

  • Private reserve gates lock strictly between 18:00 and 22:00 depending on the season. Plan driving times early.

  • Warthogs, baboons, and antelopes cross main roads frequently. Reduce speed when driving after sunset.

  • Gas stations are located along the main strip in town. Gas is rarely sold inside game reserves.
