Koriyama

Fukushima's transit crossroads built on Meiji canal engineering.

introduction

Overview

Koriyama sits at the geographic center of Fukushima Prefecture, functioning as its primary commercial and rail intersection. The Tohoku Shinkansen runs through the city, linking Tokyo to northern Tohoku while feeder lines branch west toward Lake Inawashiro. The surrounding plains turned from barren scrub into farmland after the 1879 Asaka Canal project. Today, you visit Koriyama for efficient transit connections, Meiji industrial sites, and urban hot springs.

Arrival trick

Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko trains take 75 minutes from Tokyo Station. Non-reserved cars on early morning departures rarely fill up before Koriyama.

Heritage status

The Asaka Canal system holds Japan Heritage designation for its 19th-century engineering that transformed the high plain.

Transit hub strategy

Koriyama Station connects the Tohoku Shinkansen, Ban'etsu West, and Ban'etsu East rail lines under one roof.

food

Cream Box and Fukushima sake

Koriyama's signature baked good is the Cream Box. Bakery workers spread a thick layer of sweetened condensed-milk cream over a square slice of white bread. The dish originated at Romandou bakery in 1976 and spread to bakeries across the city. The city serves as a hub for Fukushima Prefecture's sake industry. Sake bars near the station pour local brews from nearby sub-regions like Aizu and Hamadori alongside Koriyama's own breweries. Local chefs also promote Koriyama Green Curry, a dish made with locally grown spinach and green vegetables.

history

A short history

For centuries, Koriyama was a small post town along the Oshu Kaido highway. Its dry high plain had poor water retention, limiting agriculture and population growth until the late 19th century. In 1879, the new Meiji government launched the Asaka Canal project. Engineers dug a 127-kilometer channel system to divert water from Lake Inawashiro through the Ou Mountains. The project brought irrigation to the plain, allowed samurai displaced by the Boshin War to resettle as farmers, and powered Japan's first long-distance hydroelectric transmission lines.
