Medellín occupies a narrow tropical valley 1,500 metres above sea level. An efficient metro network and aerial cable cars connect dense hillside settlements to the valley floor. Expect warm, humid afternoons followed by cool mountain rainstorms. The city functions as Colombia's commercial hub for tech and textiles while maintaining strong regional culinary traditions.

Antioquian cuisine relies heavily on agricultural staples built for mountain labor. Bandeja Paisa is the region's central dish, combining red beans, white rice, crispy pork belly (chicharrón), ground meat, fried egg, plantain, avocado, and an arepa on one massive tray.Local coffee culture has shifted dramatically. Medellín grew rapidly in the early twentieth century as Colombia's industrial textiling capital.
