Mountain cooking in Monteverde relies on heartier fare than the coast. Traditional family diners, called sodas, serve casado plates featuring rice, black beans, fried plantains, cabbage salad, and grilled protein. Local dairy farming, started by Quaker settlers, produces high-altitude cheeses and ice cream sold across the ridge. Fresh coffee grown on surrounding slopes highlights local micro-lots.

Native populations inhabited the Tilarán mountain range for centuries before Spanish colonization. In 1951, eleven Quaker families from Alabama settled here to avoid military conscription, choosing the cool climate for dairy farming. They preserved a large forest tract above their pastures to safeguard the watershed, creating the groundwork for conservation.

Monteverde has no commercial airport. Most travellers arrive by road from San José or Liberia. Navigation relies on Route 606, which stretches along the main mountain ridge.
