introduction
Ninh Binh sits 95 kilometres south of Hanoi where the Red River Delta meets limestone monoliths. Most travellers use Tam Coc as a base to explore the surrounding river valleys and temples by bicycle or scooter. You move through the landscape primarily on foot or aboard small wooden boats rowed along waterways. The terrain is flat between vertical karst cliffs, making long rides easy.
Arrival option
Limousine buses run directly from Hanoi Old Quarter to Tam Coc hotels in two hours, avoiding Ninh Binh city rail station taxis.
UNESCO status
Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex holds dual World Heritage status for both cultural heritage and natural landscape values.

Ninh Binh's regional cuisine relies on two main staples: mountain goat meat (*thịt dê núi*) and fried rice crust (*cơm cháy*). Mountain goats graze freely on limestone cliffs, yielding lean meat with firm texture. Restaurants serve goat stir-fried with lemongrass, steamed with ginger, or cured in lime juice. *Cơm cháy* uses sun-dried cooked rice fried until golden and crisp, served with pork floss or goat dip.

Pair your *cơm cháy* with *tương bần*, a sweet fermented soybean paste produced in nearby Hung Yen province.
Local goat restaurants along National Route 1A fill up with regional travellers between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
history
In 968 AD, Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang unified northern Vietnam and established the capital at Hoa Lu. Surrounded by natural limestone cliffs, the site offered natural defense against external invasions. The capital remained here through the Early Le dynasty until 1010 AD, when Emperor Ly Thai To moved the royal seat to Thang Long (modern Hanoi). Ninh Binh then shifted from a political centre to an agrarian frontier.
Capital Founded
Dinh Tien Hoang unifies northern Vietnam and selects Hoa Lu as the royal capital.
Capital Relocation
Ly Thai To moves the capital north to Thang Long, reducing Hoa Lu to a regional sanctuary.
Provincial Boundary
Ninh Binh splits from Ha Nam Ninh to regain its status as an independent province.
UNESCO Recognition
Trang An Landscape Complex becomes Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site.
where to stay
Choose your base by how you prefer to spend your evenings. Tam Coc puts restaurants and scooter rentals outside your hotel door. Trang An offers isolated eco-lodges surrounded by wetlands. Ninh Binh City provides cheap business hotels next to the railway station, but requires daily transport to sights.
Live rates, matched to the areas above.
