food

Highland tea and local curries

Nuwara Eliya's culinary scene revolves around two distinct experiences: grand colonial tea service and hot, spiced hill-country curries. High altitude produces crisp nights where warm rotis and vegetable rotis sold from street stalls are local staples.Because of the cold climate, regional vegetables like leeks, carrots, and cabbages feature heavily in local curries. Tea lounges cater to travelers, while local workers eat at small eateries along New Bazaar Street.

history

A short history

Nuwara Eliya was founded in 1828 by British Colonial Governor Sir Edward Barnes as a sanatorium for British officials suffering from coastal heat. The high altitude and temperate air reminded settlers of rural Britain, prompting rapid development of European-style architecture.Initially planted with coffee, the surrounding hills were converted to tea plantations in the late 19th century following a devastating plant blight. The region became the hub of Sri Lanka's high-grown Ceylon tea industry.
